Diabetes is an epidemic. Diabetes was the 6th leading cause of death listed on U.S. death certificates in 1999. More than 60% of non-traumatic lower-limb amputations in the U.S. occur among people with diabetes. Phenomenal considering that people with diabetes comprise only about 6.2% of the population. From 1997-99, 82,000 of these were performed (annually)60-70% of people with diabetes have mild to severe forms of neuropathy. Severe forms of neuropathy are a major contributing cause of lower-extremity amputations. Lower-extremity amputations significantly impair quality of life.
